Syrian refugee seeker deported unlawfully to Syria and faces risk of being subjected to torture

On early morning of April 10, 2023, the Lebanese Intelligence forces arrested J.A. from his home. On the same day at sunset, J.A. was handed over to the Land Border Regiment at the Lebanese checkpoint of Masnaa in Anjar, Lebanon. On April 11, 2023, J.A.’s family in Lebanon received a last call from him. After his deportation from Lebanon, he was detained in several security detention centers in Damascus. On the end of May 2023, he was brought before the Single Military Judge in Syria who ordered his release on condition to join the military service.

In the beginning of April 2023, the Lebanese security forces raided different neighborhoods in Lebanon and arrested Syrian refugees, who were later unlawfully deported to Syria.

On April 10, 2023, at 5 a.m, the Lebanese Intelligence forces entered Haret Sakher neighborhood, Jounieh, north Beirut and arrested 29 Syrians- including J.A. who was arrested in his home. 

On the same day, around 7 p.m., J.A. was handed over to the Land Border Regiment of the Lebanese Army at the Lebanese checkpoint of Masnaa in Anjar, Lebanon with the intention of handing them over to Syria. A few hours later, and before crossing the Lebanese-Syrian border, most of the Syrians who were being unlawfully deported to Syria with J.A., were able to go to the Lebanese town of Souairi, which is near Masnaa- crossing border.

On April 11, 2023, J.A.’s family in Lebanon received a last call from him during which he informed them that he had been arrested again by the Land Border Regiment of the Lebanese Army in Souairi town before he was transferred again to the border area where he was able to make the call. Since then, no one knows about his whereabouts.  

On April 12, 2023, Mr. J.A.’s family inquired about him to the Lebanese General Security offices in Jounieh, Beirut and Baabda, but they denied detaining him in their centers.

On April 27, 2023, MENA Rights Group requested the urgent intervention of the UN Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances (WGEID).

After Mr. J.A.’s deportation from Lebanon, he was detained in several security detention centers in Damascus.

At the end of May 2023, he was brought before the Single Military Judge in Syria who ordered his release on a condition to join the military service.
