On July 16, 2020, Kuwait informed the Human Rights Council of its decision to accept 230 of the recommendations made by UN member states during its Universal Periodic Review (UPR) in January 2020.

On July 16, 2020, CIVICUS, the International Service for Human Rights (ISHR), Gulf Centre for Human Rights, and MENA Rights Group delivered a joint oral statement before the Human Rights Council (HRC) during the adoption of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) outcome of Kuwait. The NGOs expressed concern over the crackdown on human rights defenders and restrictions on civic space, and urged the authorities to effectively implement recommendations aimed at guaranteeing freedom of expression.


Madam President,

During its Universal Periodic Review (UPR) on January 29, 2020, Kuwait received about 300 recommendations from 122 states on issues including the right to nationality, the rights to freedom of expression, opinion and peaceful assembly. States also used this opportunity to address the situation of Kuwait’s marginalised population including the Bidoon and migrant workers.
