Saudi academic Salma al-Shehab sentenced to 27 years in prison

April 3, 2023: The WGAD issues an Opinion finding al-Shehab's detention to be arbitrary and in violation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
February 2023: Following the Supreme Court's decision ordering a retrial, al-Shehab is sentenced to 27 years in prison by the Specialised Criminal Court.
October 26, 2022: MENA Rights Group, ALQST for Human Rights, Freedom Initiative and the Human Rights Foundation seize the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (WGAD).
August 26, 2022: MENA Rights Group, ALQST for Human Rights, Freedom Initiative and the Human Rights Foundation raise al-Shehab’s case with the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of Human Rights Defenders and the UN Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Opinion and Expression.
August 9, 2022: Al-Shehab’s prison sentence is increased to 34 years by the Specialised Criminal Court of Appeal.
March 14, 2022: The Specialised Criminal Court sentences al-Shehab to six years in prison.
October 27, 2021: Al-Shehab is brought before the Specialised Criminal Court for her first hearing, after 285 days in pre-trial detention.
January 15, 2021: Salma al-Shehab is called in for questioning by the Saudi Presidency of State Security in Dammam.
