Egyptian national Essam Mohamed sentenced to death in Saudi Arabia

Essam Shazly Ahmed Mohamed is an Egyptian national who worked as a fisherman in Hurghada,Egypt. Essam was apprehended on December 16, 2021 by border patrol at the Saudi maritime border. He was found with prohibited substances and was therefore immediately transferred to Tabuk General prison. On November 30, 2022, he was sentenced to death by the Criminal Court in Tabuk. His death sentence was upheld by the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court. He is currently only awaiting execution.

Essam Shazly Ahmed Mohamed is an Egyptian national who works as a fisherman in Egypt. On December 16, 2021,  He was arrested in the sea by Saudi maritime border patrol. During his arrest, he was brutally shot at 12 times and was allegedly found with a quantity of narcotics.He was immediately transferred to Tabuk General Prison upon arrest.

Following his arrest, Shazly was charged by the Public Prosecution Office for smuggling pills and concealing the smuggled quantity of drugs.

On October 16, 2022, the first hearing took place before the Criminal Court in Tabuk. 

On November 30, 2022, the Criminal Court in Tabuk sentenced him to death pursuant to article 37 (1) of the Anti-Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances Law. The court of Appeal and the Supreme Court upheld his sentence at an unknown date. He is now awaiting execution..

Throughout his detention, he remained in solitary confinement for long periods of time, ranging to many months. During this time, he was not allowed to speak to his family or anyone in the outside world. He was subjected to acts of torture and ill-treatments throughout his detention.

On April 25, 2025, MENA Rights Group, Middle East Democracy Center, Sinai Foundation for Human Rights, ALQST for human rights, and European Saudi organisation for Human Rights submit a Request for Opinion to the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention.

2024: the Supreme Court upheld the death sentence.
2023-2024 : The Court of Appeal upheld the death sentence.
November 30, 2022: The Criminal Court in Tabuk sentences Shazly to death pursuant to article 37 (1) of the Anti-Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances Law.
October 16, 2022: Shazly is heard by the Criminal Court in Tabuk.
December 16, 2021: Shazly arrested by border patrol officer and immediately transferred to Tabuk General Prison. He was charged by the Public Prosecution Office for smuggling narcotics and concealing the smuggled quantity.
