Egyptian peaceful protester risks extradition from Saudi Arabia to Egypt, where he faces torture
Timeline
December 3, 2024: The Saudi authorities threaten to proceed with Kamel’s extradition before deporting his wife and two young children.
December 2, 2024: Kamel’s family learn that he has been transferred to al-Shumaisi detention center. The same day, in the evening, Kamel is transferred back to Southern Jeddah police station.
November 28, 2024: MENA Rights Group urgently appeals to several UN Special Procedure mandate holders, requesting they urge Saudi authorities not to extradite Kamel and to release him.
November 13, 2024 : Kamel is arrested for the second time by Saudi police forces at Egypt's request.
November 12, 2024 : Kamel receives a call from the Southern Jeddah police station summoning him to the station the following day.
October 2022 : Kamel is arrested for the first time by Saudi police forces following an initial extradition request by Egypt. After being held in detention for three days without being presented any official documentation, he is released and allowed to remain in the country without further issues.
December 10, 2021 : Kamel is sentenced in absentia to 25 years in prison, equivalent to a life sentence, for his involvement in the protests in Egypt.
2014 : Following his renewed participation in Arab Spring protests, Kamel is arrested, detained and subject to torture, including sleep deprivation. After being released on bail, he manages to flee to Saudi Arabia.
2011 : Kamel takes part non-violently in the Arab Spring protests in Egypt.
