Moroccan activists get suspended sentence over pro-Palestine sit-in
Timeline
March 24, 2025: The six-month prison sentence is upheld on appeal.
February 5, 2025: In response to the urgent appeal submitted by MENA Rights Group, several UN Special Procedures mandate holders send a communication to the Moroccan government expressing concerns that the arrests and detentions may be linked to the legitimate exercise of their rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly.
December 26, 2024: The 13 activists receive a six-month suspended prison sentence.
December 18, 2024: MENA Rights Group submits an urgent appeal to the Special Rapporteur on freedom of peaceful assembly and association, the Special Rapporteur on freedom of opinion and expression, and the Special Rapporteur on human rights defenders on behalf of six of the 13 Moroccan activists.
December 12, 2024: Opening of the first-instance trial.
November 25, 2023: 13 members of the Moroccan Front in support of Palestine and against normalisation are violently arrested after organising a sit-in supporting Palestine in front of Carrefour in Salé. They will later be prosecuted while under conditional release for "organising and participating in an undeclared demonstration".
